Tutorial (Beginner):

Design no Evil

Abstract

In this 30’ session, we explore the ethical challenges faced by UX designers working

in controversial industries such as betting, oil companies and adult entertainment.

We delve into the ethical considerations that arise in these roles and discuss design

decisions that can promote ethical choices for users. By analysing real-life examples,

we demonstrate that every job, considered ethical or not, will eventually present

ethical questions and that there is no universally ethically positive choice. Instead,

we argue that ethical decisions are subjective and based on individual moral

frameworks. Ultimately, we conclude that designers should strive to make choices

that align with their personal ethics all while ensuring they do not harm any Users in

the process, or at least strive to contain the potential harm.
